MY VENTS:
Since Syd and Kim are still in their party dresses, wouldn't this be
Christmas Eve?
Don't get me wrong, it's good that Jake is showing concern for Jane,
but they hardly ever so much as said a word to each other before. This
whole thing of getting Jake and Jane together (one of Melrose's worst-ever
couples) was way too forced, and was one of reasons why the 4th season started
to sink after Brooke died.
Funny how when Brooke is crying over a miscarriage, Billy doesn't so
much as have a sad look in his eye. Poor facial expression!!
Why does Amanda always schedule her meetings so close together? One
minute she's laying out storyboard with Bobby, the next she's supposedly
late for a Lindy Toys meeting.
Sydney's "That Girl" look is really starting to piss me off, just like
Jane's new short cut. She looks like a boy.
Alan made a reference to having to change your location in a heartbeat
if you're in the acting business. A sad but true fact. Example: Heather
changing locations from New York to L.A. while doing "Spin City."
That sketch that Jane made is hideous!! How did she ever get hired at
Mackenzie Hart??
I thought the scene with Billy telling off Brooke was one of his best ever.
Andrew Shue did a very good job acting out an angry Billy.
Obviously the lawyer that Bobby is talking about is none other than Alycia
Barnett.
How can Bobby settle a malpractice suit for Peter in less than a few hours
without him knowing it?
This originally aired on Monday, January 1, 1996 at 8 pm. Can you believe
that it's been FIVE YEARS since the original air date?? Man, time flies!!!

In the only Melrose episode ever to mention New Year's,
this episode wasn't anything wonderful. For the content it had, it was well-written.
Billy's temper, the cliffhanger, and Michael and Kim's funny dialogue saved it
from being a total washout. I thought it was too lame to be worthy of a 5, but
not bad enough to be a 4.
Summary:
Sydney finds her way into the Wilshire chapel and prays that Jane doesn't die.
Kimberly enters and assures her that whatever she says will be kept in confidence,
but if she's questioned by the authorities about how the pills managed to find
their way into Jane's drink.... then Sydney confesses that she did it and Kim
offers to help her with an evil smile on her face. Michael observes Jane and
finds she has had a stroke. He asks her what she remembers, and she recalls
the dancing and drinking and going up to Bobby's guest room with him, but Michael
relieves her when he says they didn't do anything. He brushes a pointed instrument
against her foot asking for a reflex. Jane feels it on her left foot but feels
nothing on her right. Jane then realizes she's paralyzed and demands a confirmation
from Michael. He says it's too soon to tell, but Jane won't listen. She starts
bawling over this unfortunate mishap. Sydney is in Kimberly's office talking
about what happened and Kimberly says that she needs to take this and learn from
it. Kim gives her two identical pills to refill her bottle and suggests she
play the perfect care-giver to Jane to ward off suspicion. Michael receives a
fax from the hospital at Burns-Mancini regarding Jane's condition and sees that
the drug phenol barbitol triggered the stroke. He then sees Sydney come in and
realizes that she has the tranquilizers which contain just that. Sydney
denies doing this, and Michael counts the full 30 pill prescription in her purse.
Sydney then suggests they take care of Jane until she gets well. Jake brings
some flowers to Jane in the hospital and she talks about how she's undergoing
physical therapy. Jake tells her that she really needs to save herself, and
she must not let the light inside her go out. Jane then declares she feels
all alone, and then breaks down into Jake's arms. Michael is wheeling Jane
around the hospital in a chair and Kim shows up. He drags her into a side room
and accuses of her of conspiring with Sydney to drug Jane's drink. Kimberly says
that what she and Syd talk about is in confidence and she had no part in that, and
he's pushing her close to the edge. Michael takes Jane to a dayroom. On New
Year's Eve, Michael takes Jane to the beachhouse
to watch the ball drop in Times
Square, and offers his beachhouse as an alternative
place to stay. She accepts bedding on the couch and Sydney's services, which
Michael has cut back from her office duties. Sydney goes to find linens for the
couch and Michael lifts Jane onto the couch but accidentally drops her on top.
Sydney reappears to find Michael on top of Jane and thinks he's trying to
seduce her. Michael goes into the other room and Sydney fires off accusations.
Michael then says that Jane's staying there until she gets better. Sydney is
back in Kim's office the next morning talking about Jane living with them and
Jo and Richard attempting to prove their innocence and then says she would
have been better off if Jane had just died. Kim grabs her,
upset at her words and then Syd assures that it was just a figure of speech,
and that she promises to take care of Jane.
Jake is over at Matt's early the next morning wondering about Jane's condition.
Matt finds out that Jane is in ICU, but nothing more. Jake sees that Alan has
spent the night and leaves the two alone. Alan then rushes off for an early
audition. Matt and Alan are at Shooters that night and Alan tells Matt that
he has a friend in Manhattan who can put him up for a while until he gets
more money doing stage work and he'll be leaving town shortly. Matt takes
Alan to the airport on New Year's Day. They say their goodbyes, but Matt
can't let him leave, and asks him to move in. Alan then accepts, having
wanted that but wanted Matt to ask.

Peter is on the phone with his lawyer regarding a patient who is suing him for
malpractice. Amanda shows up with a crossaint for him and Peter snaps about
how this suit could damage his reputation. Amanda is frustrated with him
yelling at her so she leaves, and then promises to forget they ever had that
conversation. Amanda and Bobby are going over his cable company ad campaign
in her office and she tells him about Peter's malpractice suit. She says that
he's been trying to get away to "duck the deposition." Bobby offers his
Palm Springs home, the place where he's going for New Year's, but she declines
because three's a crowd in this case, then asks Alison if she'd like to be
Bobby's date for New Year's. She accepts after Bobby tells her about his
home. In Palm Springs, Peter is guzzling scotch and Bobby starts talking about
his malpractice suit and offers his lawyer's services. Amanda then appears
and tells them to come outside and enjoy the night. Peter instead takes
Amanda to the shower. Bobby finds Alison outside on a lounge chair and
they try to make small talk with no luck. Bobby wishes her a Happy New Year.
Amanda, wearing a negligee, finds Peter passed out on the bed and starts to
seduce him. The two make love. Amanda awakens shortly before midnight and
goes outside to clear her head. Peter barely awakens and follows her,
looking through the window at her and Bobby, who apparently couldn't sleep
either. Bobby tells her for his New Year's resolution that he's not going to
hide his feelings for her anymore. As 1996 is rang in with fireworks, Bobby
grabs her and kisses her with Peter watching from the window.
Peter is in his
office going through papers when Amanda rings in on his answering machine,
wondering why he stormed out of Palm Springs without saying a word to her.
Bobby shows up and gives him papers with the settlement of the suit. Peter then
accuses him of using that to get Amanda. Bobby grabs him and Peter punches
Bobby in the face. Bobby says that that was a mistake, and if Peter does it
again, then it will be his last.

MEMORABLE MOMENTS
"I am more than confident in my relationship with you. I did not and
do not, consider Jane to be any threat at all. My god, I'm not Kimberly after all."
--Sydney Andrews, defending herself over Michael's accusations
MICHAEL: Tell me something, did you tell Syd to drug Jane
or did you do it yourself? Cause it's way too big a coincidence
that the same drug your prescribed for Sydney ended up
in Jane's drink.
KIMBERLY: I believe that's a two-part accusation. As for
the first part, anything Sydney said to me I could not discuss
with you due to doctor-patient confidentially. As for the second
part, your insenuation that I could participate in such an act?
Well I have only this to say: go to hell, Michael.
MICHAEL: Why did i think I might get a straight answer from
you? That would mean you would had to have changed.
KIMBERLY: Maybe you're the one who should be contemplating
a change, Michael. After all, how many lives can one man ruin?
MICHAEL: Let me tell you something, Kimberly. I am watching
this very carefully. And if any of my hunches are correct, then Syd
is gonna find herself in jail, and you'll be back on the radio
talking gibberish to the masses.
KIMBERLY: I suggest you watch what your threaten, doctor.
Because I have a very high threshold of tolerance, but you're
pushing me way too close to the edge of it.
BEST SCENES:
Kimberly's rage when Sydney says "I would be much better off if Jane had
just died."
Billy breaking off his marriage to Brooke.

Brooke and Billy are with Norman, Brooke's lawyer, to finalize the transfer of
her father's trust fund for the baby. Billy gets up and leaves to go back to
work, but then Brooke confesses about the lab mix-up and she was never pregnant.
Norman tells her that if she's not pregnant, then the money stays where it is.
At D&D, Billy finds Alison and asks what's with her lately not talking to him
since Christmas. Alison says that she realizes now the two of them are just
leading different lives. A co-worker tells Billy he intercepted a call from
Brooke to meet her at Wilshire immediately. He drives over and finds Brooke
crying that she's had a "miscarriage." The next morning, Brooke tells Billy
she wants to get pregnant again right away and Alison shows up and gives her
a plant and offers to help. Brooke says she can help by telling the building
that she doesn't want any sympathy. Alison follows Billy outside and he says
he's still suspicious about the trust fund because Brooke is taking the
miscarriage well. Alison tells him to take care and then leaves. That night,
Billy is holding the teddy bear that he was going to give to the baby and
Brooke calls him in the bedroom and tells him she's ovulating. She's wearing a
mesh robe and starts to caress him, saying how much she wants another baby.
Billy refuses because it doesn't feel right and
Brooke flies off in an awful
rage, screaming that Billy doesn't find her attractive. She accuses him of
being selfish and throws him out, slamming the door behind her. Billy finds
Dr. Fisher at Wilshire and she offers her sympathies for the rare incident
that's happened to them. Billy asks why miscarriage is rare, and Dr. Fisher
says that Brooke was never pregnant. Billy finds her at Shooters and pulls
her outside, shouting that he's fed up with being used as a tool to make
her pregnant and get her money. Billy then declares that their marriage
is over and storms off. Alison awakens in Palm Springs on New Year's Day
to find Billy outside in his car. Billy tells her about the false pregnancy
and says he needs someone to talk to. They head out to grab breakfast.
Late that night, they return to Melrose Place and Billy thanks her for
breakfast and lunch and is then ready to face Brooke again. He opens his
apartment to find the phone off the hook and Brooke in the bathroom
in a pool of blood, having slit her wrists.
