Summary: Billy is attempting a job as a department store Santa because its the only holiday job he can get. Alison meets with a doctor, Dr. Miller, to find the cause of the sudden enlargement of her uterus. At first, Dr. Miller suspects that Alison may be pregnant, but then finds out that Alison is in need of a sonogram. She advises Alison to get hospital insurance, because she's going to need it. Billy, dressed up in a Santa costume, starts ho-hoing in front of Alison, who breaks down crying. She tells Billy that the doctor found a benign tumor growing in her uterus and an operation is needed that could affect her chance of having children. She can't afford the operation because she has no insurance and her parents are living on savings. Billy says there must be a way and offers to help her. Billy says they need to deal with the bureaucrats face to face. The hospital office worker says there's no way Alison can be admitted to the hospital without insurance unless she prepays, and the entire visit will cost $15,000. Billy says they're going to another hospital, but the man says that all hospitals have the same rules. After visiting several other hospitals, Billy says he could always con his parents for the money. Alison draws the line there because this is her problem, but Billy insists on being of help. Jane, Michael, and Matt are back at the complex hanging Christmas decorations when Billy and Alison show up. He starts cutting down the entire medical field and Jane and Michael try to defend it, saying that doctors really are trying to better the health care system. Billy says that's a load of crap, because all they want is money. He leaves the scene and then Rhonda and Terrence show up dressed formally. Rhonda tells them they're headed to the symphony. Michael stops Alison before she goes into her apartment and offers his ear. Upon hearing the story, he offers to see if he can get Alison admitted to Wilshire. Michael shows up at D&D on his lunch break the next day and tells Alison that he can get her admitted free of charge. The only thing she'll have to pay for is the hospital room. Michael tells Alison to fill out some paperwork and have it to him by 5 that day. Her surgery is next week.
Listen to Rick Dees morning radio.
Listen to Billy ho-hoing.

Matt and Rhonda are buying some produce for the halfway house. Rhonda goes to load up the last box of strawberries when a stranger claims them as his own. The two argue until Matt breaks it up, saying the strawberries were in the back of his truck the entire time. The stranger apologizes for being rude and introduces himself as Terrence Haggard. Terrence asks Rhonda out to a restaurant. Terrence and Rhonda enter the restaurant later and Rhonda is angered by the way the maitre'd was staring her down and that they placed the two of them in the back of the restaurant. She suggests they get a couple of dogs from Ping's and drive down to the beach. This is interrupted by the waiter, who needs to talk to the owner about their meal. Terrence reveals that he owns the restaurant. Terrence picks up Rhonda on Melrose that Saturday and asks her to go with him to Catalina. Rhonda can't because she has a Saturday class, and Terrence offers to chaffeur Rhonda to the class. Rhonda questions why Terrence is driving a convertible now. Terrence says that the truck he was driving is for "hauling produce," and this is the "on the town" car.

Jake is meeting an ex-girlfriend, Colleen Patterson, for lunch. Colleen is talking about her new life with her husband in Seattle. She now has a family and a 4-year-old son named David, and tells Jake that biologically, Jake is the father. Colleen says that her husband, Robert, is the only father that David has ever known and asks Jake to sign some papers, legally making Robert his father. Jake abruptly refuses. He is angered that Colleen told him the truth about the son and tried to make him give it up in one breath. He refuses to sign the papers and says he won't go away -- that's what he'll do for David. Jake is talking to Jo about the problem later and wants David to know that he wants him. Jo explains to him that he could be ruining David's family and demands to know why it is that men always feel that if you love someone you have to own them. Jake refuses to talk anymore because of her comment. Jake, with a teddy bear in hand, goes to the hotel pool where Colleen is with Robert and David. Colleen sees him from a distance and orders him to leave before he starts breaking things. She is upset because she gave him the chance to talk and he refused. Colleen says if he wants to talk, then he should call, but don't pull any "macho crap" on her. Jo brings Jake bread and wine to apologize for the comments last night. Jake explains he's going to try and get joint custody of the kid on the grounds that Colleen lied to him and he could be a good dad. Jake is worried that he'll never be good at "anything adult" and he wants to take care of that kid. Jo tries to make him see all the responsibility of having a kid. Jake blows up again and says that Jo doesn't understand. He throws her out. Colleen shows up at the bike shop to talk to Jake. She starts talking about motorbikes and that she would've been happy with Jake even if they lived in a trailer. She says that she has a family now and they deserve to be happy. This is the best thing Jake could give to him. Jake refuses to listen, saying he needs direction and responsiblity, and he's sick of nothing in his life working. Jake tells her he'll call tomorrow, and back off a little. Jake calls her the next day, saying they could work something out. He heads out Melrose Place dressed up, and runs into Jo on the way, admitting she may have been right. Jo uses this chance to follow him. Jake is having lunch with Colleen and David and David's babbling this mess about Batman and Spiderman. When the waiter brings the fries, Jake is delighted to see that David shares his taste for dipping fries in mayonnaise. David then asks why his father is not at lunch. Jake is saddened to hear the comment, as he realizes now that David is happier with his adopted father. Jake asks where he signs the papers. Colleen thanks Jake for signing the papers and lets David sit on his motorcycle. Jake hugs David goodbye and Jo snaps their picture. She gives it to Jake later, and he is ecstatic over it. He sticks it to his refrigerator and is now reassured that his kid is in good hands.
Listen to Jake and his kid "argue" about Batman.

The Stuff You May Have Missed:

  • Miko Hughes, the young actor who played David Patterson, is otherwise known as Aaron, Michelle Tanner's dorky friend on Full House.
  • John Marshall Jones later went on to play Floyd Henderson, the father on the WB sitcom Smart Guy.

    My Vents:

  • I liked the Rick Dees bit at the beginning. Funny and interesting material.
  • So Colleen lives in Seattle now, huh? I wonder if she knows Keith Gray?
  • My guess is the only reason that Beth Toussaint didn't play Colleen during season 5 of Melrose is because she was already in a role on Savannah on the WB.
  • That hospital attendant looked a lot like Bruce Teller at D&D, except this guy's voice is annoying and he's a major dork. Ranks right up there with Dr. Moseley in season 6.
  • Billy really got on my nerves in this episode. All the ho-hoing and bitching and griping.
  • Harley-Davidson obviously got some free advertising in Melrose on several occassions.
  • Don't you just love those early day happy endings? Thank goodness Amanda showed up four episodes later.

    Memorable Quotes:
JAKE: I have a lunch -- with my kid. Don't let it go to your head, but you might be right.
    JO: Don't worry, it will.
